Zuiderzeemuseum Information centre

Mr. Maarten Kolk
The Zuiderzee museum shows the cultural history of the former Zuiderzee region. The information centre of the museum is located in the museumpark, which contains over 130 historical buildings from the Zuiderzee area. The museum invited us to make a new design for this information centre.
Besides the functional lay-out of the information centre of the Zuiderzeemuseum, we were asked to think about the educational function of the centre and to connect the historical collection with the new vision of the museum, in which contemporary art and design is a main subject.
‘One of our main thoughts was that the interior should be a place where one could be informed, but where also information could be found your self. We designed a cabinet, in which booklets as well as collection pieces are shown, which gives a little preview of the current exhibitions in the museum. The counter with attached a public table invites visitors to read the museum’s magazine or other books.
Inside the interior we wanted to referr to the museumpark itself, as a special place in the Netherlands. Therefore we created a big tile wall made of ‘makkumer witjes’, a specific local tile that is made from clay from the Zuiderzee region and frequently used in historical houses. We illustrated all the houses from the museumpark and sand blasted them as a map in the tiles. Hereby the clay’s actual color appeared within the graphical illustration of the buildings. Other elements of the interior are the Zuiderzee Stool, the animation Forming of the Zuiderzee and the Zuiderzee Vase.
In this overall design we wanted to integrate the information about the Zuiderzee with the interior, so it would become one coherent space.’
The Forming of the Zuiderzee area is a design, commisioned by the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands. The idea for this animation came up during designing the new interior of the museum’s information centre.
‘Besides the functional lay-out of the information centre of the Zuiderzeemuseum, we were asked to think about the educational part. Herefore we designed the stop-motion animation Vorming van het Zuiderzeegebied (Forming of the Zuiderzee area). The animation shows the visitor in three minutes the history and the draining of the Zuiderzee region, from the year 100 till present. It tells about the development of land, so it was a logical step to use real clay to tell this story”.
