scarification series

Ms. Lara de Greef
The skin of specific tribal people after scarification’s, after a rite de passage, explores notions of joy and sorrow, of beauty and pain. The sensitive sphere of this texture, when applied within the ceramic skin, could release similar sentiments. Lara created vases and embroiled small patterns on the surface to use this vase as the blueprint for the mould. Accordingly she poured plaster around this shape, creating a mould in the form of the vase. This plaster, of course, got completely stuck within texture of the embroiled patterns. Therefore, when the mould was taken of, many scarifications carved them through the skin of the mould, creating a hybrid scent of fragility and force, both positive as negative.
