Strom - Fast and Energy Efficient Waterway Transport

Mr. Johannes Rojahn
Strom is a concept for fast and energy efficient transport on water. The key is a combination of a fish like propulsion system to raise efficiency and a hydrofoil technology to reduce drag. There are extremely large and fast fish like Tunas, which may reach speeds of up to 77 kilometers per hour and travel 10 800 kilometers a year. Evolution has led to a big amount of tricks to use energy efficiently. In nature it is always an advantage to accomplish more with a smaller amount of energy. A boat propeller has an efficiency of up to 75%. So there is still a big potential for improvement and a bionic propulsion system seems very promising.
First a very intensive search and study of biological and bionic papers as well as similar projects led to the definition of the desired movement, mechanics, fin properties and other parameters. Then a few small scale functioning models were built to judge difficulties and test feasibility.
At last a platform was designed that uses the system. It can be used as a passenger craft or for rescue operations. Besides promising to be more efficient than conventional boats the fin propulsion is expected to have other advantages like reducing the harm to the shore by reducing the waves.
