Mr. Ignacio Ciocchini
Holiday Shops
The client had been producing a Holiday Market in Bryant Park using steel tubing and white vinyl tents. The production company and the corporation that manages the park were looking for a more upscale image and wanted to relate the Bryant Park market to a European style Christmas market. The client also wanted to relate the structures to the landscape design of the park that is heavily influenced by French parks. The designer researched European markets and also amusement park equipment that has to be put up and down at least once a year and then stored off-site. The result of the design exercise is a system of aluminum and polycarbonate panels that allows the client to put together up to five different Holiday kiosks sizes. The panels store flat and are easy to assemble with standard screws, hardware and tools. The design of the kiosks was inspired by the main branch of New York Public Library, a Landmark building that is inside Bryant Park, and the Crystal Palace, a historic structure, designed after the London Crystal Palace, that was in Bryant Park until it burnt to the ground on October 5, 1858. A more traditional aesthetic was favored for the project following a requirement by the client and because approvals from the Landmarks Design Commission of the City of New York were necessary. Bryant Park is a Scenic Landmark of the City of New York.
