06_ WAVE Newsbox

Mr. Ignacio Ciocchini
The WAVE Newsbox (urban newspaper vending machine) provides effective advertising and visibility for newspapers in two ways. First, the curvilinear design thrusts the fronts of the vending units out at an angle that pedestrians can easily see as they walk towards the product without rotating their heads. The angled display increases the chances of an impulse buy by increasing the visual contact of the front page of the publication by the pedestrians. The product also provides more slots, for larger logos, on both front and back of the newsbox, as well as logos on the vending units. This allows most paid publications to be prominently advertised in at least three directions. The back of the box is also angled to aim some of the logos at vehicle passengers.
The WAVE newsbox is modular and consists of five interchangeable parts. Two triangular legs are bolted to the ground, and three aluminum cabinets, each housing two vending units, are attached to the legs by concealed bolts. The design allows for quick repair onsite for minor damage, or for quick and simple replacement of a more seriously damaged part. The previous design combined a unitary shelf with six standard vending units.
- The top slants toward the street to protect publications during rain or snow.
- Each vending unit may be configured to display and vend one paid publication or two free ones. With six vending units per newsbox, many different combinations are possible.
- The newsbox is fabricated from laser-cut aluminum sheet and square tubing. This keeps the overall weight to a minimum, provides durability, and facilitates transportation and repair. Other parts are made from ¼” Lexan, aluminum castings, and break-formed sheet metal.
Response to the WAVE newsbox was very positive. The 45 units that were recently installed in Midtown Manhattan are selling more papers than the previous units. Publishers like the curvilinear design of the newsboxes and appreciate that the product presents the front cover of their papers much more effectively to pedestrians. They are also pleased that there is room for more, and larger, logos on the newsboxes.
