The Chelsea bench design was inspired by the constant movement and urban rhythm of New York City, the fast dance of pedestrians and cars that are always on a rush to get somewhere. Other inspirations were the new New York stainless steel-and-glass bus shelters, the digital world, and contemporary architecture.

The seats have generous proportions to accommodate a wide range of the population and make sure users are not too close to each other while seating, a complaint about public seating the designer heard several times during the research and observation phase. The stainless steel arch base is very strong while giving the bench a light and floating appearance. The combination of stainless steel with charcoal grey and the “moving” laser-cut pattern make the product appropriate for most areas in New York City.

The main parts of the bench are a fabricated U-channel stainless steel base with a light bead-blasted finish, laser-cut and press-formed carbon-steel plate seats with a dark charcoal-grey powder-coated finish; and fabricated stainless steel plate armrests with a light bead-blasted finish.

The product was approved in early 2010 by the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York Public Design Commission. A prototype was installed in the Meat Packing District recently and the first order of 15 units will be installed in south west Chelsea during February 2011.
