Description

 

In celebration of its new MFA Fashion Design and Society Program, Parsons The New School for Design presents Workwear, an exhibition and programming series exploring the legacy of workwear in American fashion and its influence on contemporary constructions of New York as a fashion capital. The exhibition, symposium, and discussions that comprise Workwear reflect the diverse array of references that influence the program, from photography to film, literature, performance and communication design.

 

Exhibition

Admission: Free and open to the public
Gallery Hours: Open daily noon - 6 p.m. and late Thursday evenings until 8 p.m.;

closed all major holidays and holiday eves

Illustrating the themes of Workwear, this exhibition includes a film installation of Donna Karan's Seven Easy Pieces; Boilersuit by Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons in collaboration with Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller; a newly commissioned film by the fashion label Boudicca; Paul Fejos' silent-film classic Lonesome (1928); a mascot installation by communication designers Rebecca and Mike; and installations by Shelley Fox, director of the MFA Fashion Design and Society program.

The symposium explores the themes of Workwear from historical, cultural, and sociological perspectives, and will include work from an unpublished photo essay by Walker Evans, as well as discussions with fashion historians, critics, and designers including Zowie Broach of Boudicca and Vince Aletti.
