The Royal Academy of Art pushes boundaries
The students of the departments of ArtScience, Furniture Design and Textile demonstrate the dialogue between the physical and virtual world and show how various research processes work. Rutger de Regt (third-year Furniture Design) will give a live demonstration of how furniture is produced through the use of self-developed processes. A new design comes into being by imposing restrictions in the use of technique and material, and not by a previously determined design. What makes the KABK unique is that fashion and textile are represented in one course programme. The creative process involved in this course consists of thorough preparation, experiment, research and technique. This process is brought to life in the presentation with the use of sample books and videos. Students of the ArtScience department allow the visitors to experiment with the human interface ‘Get in Touch’. Visitors are enticed to feel the spines of the fabric cylinder-formed installation and in doing so to make music with it. It is a piece that is as much an installation as a performance and a musical instrument. What affect does an interface have on people’s behaviour? And what happens when people realise afterwards that the interaction involved them sharing some rather intimate moments? Another installation is a flexible, constantly changing projection environment created by clouds of candy floss. This installation continually takes on a different form as candy floss is constantly added and the projections changed.
Through the use of furniture, textile samples and videos, visitors can gain insight into the decisions students make as part of their creative process.

The KABK’s presentation focuses on two core values which are very similar to the Academy’s mission, contemporary art education and the profession of designers and artists: the dialogue between the physical and virtual world and the importance of the research process. The KABK’s educational methods are aimed at developing an experimental mentality in its students. Products and works of art are the result of artistic research. The resulting forms are not the main aim, but rather the outcome of all the decisions taken during the research process. New technologies increase the possibilities available to designers and artists.
The grand opening will be held on Tuesday the 13th of April at 6 pm.
