The “Human Cities Brussels-Istanbul: Designing Public Space” project is implemented by Pro Materia (Brussels, BE), with the leading partners ISTAV (Istanbul, TR) and Recyclart (Brussels, BE), with the support of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency and CFCU as the contracting authority, in order to promote Civil Society Dialogue between Turkey and EU in culture and arts. The project aims at encouraging an interdisciplinary exchange between Istanbul and Brussels, as well as the other cities participating in the first Human Cities project about urban design and culture and their interactions with public spaces. Public spaces will be reinterpreted considering the needs of individuals. This time we take the theme of ‘Designing Public Space’, exploring the subject through events, lectures, installations and exhibitions happening at the Galata Bridge and at Santralistanbul. Highlights include Recyclart Brussels with sound artist Guy De Bièvre in collaboration with Yildiz Technical University Istanbul launch of ‘My Favorite Istanbul Sound’ interactive project resulting with a live concert at Santralistanbul.

Helsinki Design

Helsinki Design Week offers design professionals a unique opportunity to display their skills and versatility-and everyone can be a part of the atory. Heads are already turning towards the future, and particulary towards 2012, when Helsinki will reign as the World Design Capital. Finnish design from Helsinki Design Week will take its place this year at IDW.

Kitchen Ecology

Spending hours slaving alone over dinner is a thing of the past. The kitchen has developed into a habitual hot spot for socializing with more integration into the living spaces of the house, and food storage and preparation is only part of the recipe for a well-designed space. As the new hub of the modern home, we expect more from our kitchen—convenience, comfort, cleanliness, the latest technology— while simultaneously demanding less—less energy consumption, water usage, and waste. It’s a delicate balance, and one that is in a constant state of development.

In this spirit of evolving the archetype, IDW 2010 presents European and American flavors to Kitchen Ecology: Recipes for Good Design, which has been composed by Designboom and Dwell. Featuring works from the freshest young and upcoming international designers, this curated exhibition will explore ways to tweak the basic ingredients that make up our kitchens to produce the most eco-friendly, energy efficient models possible.
