Invitation to and participation conditions for the

Young Contract Creations Award 2010: Upholstery

powered by Polsterfashion and Trevira CS

In 2010, Heimtextil, the International Trade Fair for Home and Contract Textiles, will for the third time organize the Young Contract Creations Award Upholstery; powered by Polsterfashion and Trevira CS.

In cooperation with our partners Trevira GmbH and the publishing house Verlag M. Ritthammer GmbH, the event will revolve around seating furniture in functionality and design for the contract sector.

Under the title “sit and wait,” Heimtextil’s focus for 2010 will be on the design of seating furniture for waiting areas: whether in public areas – counter areas, train stations or airports – or in traditional waiting areas in the health & care segment, nobody likes to wait, and many people frequently consider this time “lost.” The “experienced” waiting time is mainly characterized by the circumstances of waiting; and the atmosphere of waiting is a crucial factor for visitors and customers when deciding whether they wish to return to the waiting area.

With their seating furniture concepts, designers and interior architects can play a significant role in meeting the diverse challenges of waiting environments and turning a necessary evil into a pleasant experience: while conveying safety, transparency and trust is a priority for doctors’ or lawyers’ offices, and conveying a sense of service is important for government agencies, an airline may choose to enhance customer retention by expanding its services with exclusive airport lounges for short- and long-distance travellers.

The applicants may select their models for “sit and wait” (seating furniture for waiting areas) from these four topics:

  • - Health & Care: designs for a waiting room in a doctor’s office or clinic
  • - Public: designs for a lounge for travellers on charter flights (vacation destinations)
  • - Public: designs for a lounge for frequent travellers (long distance flights in Business class)
  • - Public: designs for a waiting area in a government agency (municipality, public agencies, courts)

The furniture submitted must take the following criteria into consideration:

  • - the emotional challenges of the respective waiting environments
  • - innovative shapes
  • - practicability of use (e.g., easy re-design of arrangements)
  • - wear resistance
  • - low maintenance
  • - low flammability of all materials
  • - suitable for production standardization
  • - sustainable use of all materials.

At the interface of interior architects and product and textile designers in connection with function-oriented challenges, the award will go to outstanding performances delivered by students majoring in the respective fields, to exam candidates and graduates. The aim is to develop innovative approaches and solutions with concrete implementation potential. Young talents will be promoted: they have the opportunity to present their designs to a broad audience at Heimtextil and, thus, make first contacts for a great start in their careers.

Task and participation conditions

Task

The participant designs and builds a prototype of a new, innovative piece of seating furniture for the design of waiting areas and sends both the construction plans and the piece of furniture to Messe Frankfurt in due time. The above named criteria must be complied with. The piece of seating furniture may accommodate one or more persons. Different materials may be combined in the piece of seating furniture; its characterizing element must be the use of a furniture textile. For his or her model, the participant selects textiles from a Trevira CS collection. Samples may be ordered at Messe Frankfurt, Ms. Kathrin Müller.
