Theme  Soft Space

Due to the recent worldwide economic crisis, gloomy projections on the future have been heard daily and even the possibility of economic depression is predicted. Design industry does not seem to be apart from the current economic slowdown because it has been closely connected to the consumerism.

On the other hand, it has been said that ‘Design loves the economic depression.’ ‘True design is really looking forward to the depression.’ Historically, designers have produced better designs and tended to thrive in the hard times, such as the Great Depression, wars and resources insufficient crisis. From this point of view, the design is not merely related to the economic depression, but even paradoxically interconnected to the crisis as well.

Kristina Wilson, author of “Livable Modernism said, “American designers took the Depression as a call to arms.” “It was a chance to make good on the Modernist promise to make affordable, intelligent design for a broad audience.” True design can become a concrete and substantial solution to the people who are seeking hopes in the crisis and to stimulate the economy.

‘Soft Space’ might be a flexible and extensible space for various meanings and functions. It can be opposite to the hard and fixed spaces but rather be in favor of the spaces for floating concepts, changing functionalities and reacting to the flow of the people. Conceiving the flexible thinking and creative imaginations of the spaces, we might be able to make the various alternatives, substitutions, and even supplements in the design to endure the depression.
