40TH ANNUAL UCDA DESIGN COMPETITION

The UCDA Design Competition recognizes the best of the exceptional design work done to promote educational institutions (secondary, vocational, or higher education). The UCDA Design Competition for 2010 is now underway. UCDA is looking for your biggest and best ideas for our annual design competition — whether it be print, electronic, green, and even student work!

This year's show will be on display at the 40th Annual UCDA Design Conference, October 2-5, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Awards will be given out on Sunday, October 3, with certificates being mailed to winner's after the conference.

Enter today! Entry deadline July 9, 2010. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. on that date.

Deadline
Entries must be received by Friday, July 9, 2010. Enter early and avoid the last minute rush to gather, prepare and package your entries. But why wait? Now accepting entries.

Eligibility
Any work designed, published, or used by an educational institution is eligible. Work must have been published between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010.

 

Judging Criteria
Print entries will be judged for excellence in concept, design, illustration, typography, and printing, as well as effectiveness, quality, and creativity in solving the problems inherent in institutional design.

Electronic Media entries will be judged for appearance, flexibility, interactivity and suitability for their intended audiences. Creativity in solving the problems of designing for electronic media is primary. Work accepted for the show will receive Awards of Excellence or Silver Certificates. A select number of entries will be honored with the UCDA Gold Cube. Presentation of awards will be at the 39th Annual UCDA Design Conference in Seattle, Washington in October.

 

Going Green
The competition will again have three green categories:

  • 47. Message (Message on sustainability as part of overall communications)
  • 48. Production (Statement of recycled paper, soy ink, etc., printed on piece)
  • 49. Reduction (Alternate sources used instead of printing. e.g., online newsletter, electronic information, etc.)

In addition to being judged for excellence in concept, design, illustration, typography, and printing, as well as effectiveness, quality, and creativity in solving the problems inherent in institutional design, the judges are looking for entrants who take initiative in the creation of communications that reduce environmental impact and/or make strong statements of leadership in this area. Please complete the second half of Entry Form B for categories 47 through 49.

** Non-members may join UCDA and be eligible for member entry fees by completing the UCDA membership section on Entry Form A Designate new membership status on Form A.* Please include your membership number (found on current ID cards) on all entry forms. Photographs of Entries

Along with your entries, please provide an electronic image of the piece(s) you are submitting. Images may be submitted as PDF files, JPGs or TIFs and saved on a CD or DVD. All images may be on a single CD/DVD even if entering in more than one category. You may also submit more than one image per entry.

Providing these images will ensure inclusion in the competition awards show and CD. Entries may also be included online at the UCDA website.

Please label your CD with your last name and institution name. File should be named: CATEGORY#_LASTNAME_ENTRYTITLE

Notification and Hanging/Display Fees

Winners will be notified by August 15, 2010. Hanging/display fees of $25 plus one additional copy of each piece will be required for each winning entry accepted for the exhibit. Maximum hanging fee per entrant is set at $200.

 

 

 

Rights Statement

Submission of entries to the UCDA Competition acknowledges the right of the University & College Designers Association to use them for exhibition, publication, and publicity. Entrants agree to hold UCDA harmless of any claims that may be made against it by reason of such reproductions. Securing releases is the sole responsibility of the entrant. Submission of entries is acknowledgment of these terms. Entries become the property of the University & College Designers Association, and cannot be returned. UCDA takes no responsibility for determining official authorship or ownership of Web sites. The judges will review all pieces submitted to the Competition, and the final number of pieces accepted into the show will be at their discretion. The judges may recategorize entries; if so, there will be no adjustment of entry fees. Decision of the judges on entries accepted and the level of awards are final.
