"BorderExperience. Realities of German Seperation" is a permanent exhibition in the "Tränenpalast" at Friedrichstrasse train station.
Tears of good bye, longing, rage and desperation – no other place in Germany concentrated the emotions of the german separation like the “Tränenpalast” – ‘palace of tears’, the famous checkpoint for the departure and border control from the east into the west at Berlins Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse. Here the people felt imminently how strong the impact of the german separation was to their personal lifes. Only after the fall of the wall in 1989 the “Tränenpalast” lost its function as a checkpoint.
Within the historical and listed building of the “Tränenpalast” the State of Germany initiated the permanent exhibition called “BorderExperience. Realities of German Separation”. With the use of many biographical examples, 570 objects and 30 media installations the exhibition portraits the daily reality in reference to separation and the inner border on 550 sqm.
COORDINATION has co-created and transformed the historical content and narrative into a spatial design and was also responsible for the implementation and realization of the permanent exhibition. The Exhibition was officially opened by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on September 14th 2011.
