Architecture

  • The twenty-five artists in Overthrown: Clay Without Limits took on adventurous challenges to make the works in this exhibition. Most were made especially for Overthrown and many are in direct dialogue with our dynamic Daniel Libeskind-designed architecture; they move beyond the pedestal to the wall, the floor, and even the ceiling. A few extend beyond the Anschutz Gallery, across the entire museum complex. They break boundaries that are physical, technological, conceptual, and spatial.

In business from the 1870s until the 1940s Bedford Lemere and his son Harry Bedford Lemere pioneered professional architectural photography and set the standards for others to follow.

  • On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Fagus Factory and its nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bauhaus Archive is presenting the exhibition "Focusing the Modern: The Fagus Factory photographed by Albert Renger-Patzsch" from June 22 to August 29, 2011. Renger-Patzsch was a protagonist of New Objectivity. His photographs of the building complex designed in 1911 by Walter Gropius in collaboration with Adolf Meyer, which were produced for advertising purposes, have had a strong influence on its image and reception.

  • In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Manhattan Grid, Mapping the Cityscape focuses on the ways in which mapping influences our perception of the environment. Historically, cartographers created maps to document the built environment to ease navigation and ensure the safety of both city dwellers and travelers. With developments in desktop publishing, mapmakers were empowered with tools to create diagrammatic and interpretive maps that conveyed more layers of information.

  • This year’s 5th edition of Lodz Design starts on October 20th, 2011. During the past four years the Festival has evolved from a local event consisting of several exhibitions, into the biggest such Festival presenting a wide range of Design in Poland. Owing to well-known experts, international visitors and guests participating in the Festival, it became renowned worldwide. The time that has passed since the first edition also allowed to clearly define the Festival’s character and structure.
