ELE & ELA space saving concept.
The Ela & Ele set of chairs was the result of my Masters Degree at the Bergen National Academy of The Arts, and was first shown at the graduation exhibition in Bergen, Norway, in May 2006.
Ela & Ele were designed in response to the ever decreasing size of urban apartments, at the same time as our wishes and needs to furnish remain unchanged. The two chairs consist of a main chair and a shell chair. The shell chair can be stacked on top of the main chair, thus enveloping the chair completely in the front and on the sides, giving the set of chairs the appearance of a single piece of furniture.
Ela & Ele won 1st prize in the Young Talent Award from The Norwegian Design Council in 2007. The jury’s verdict was:
Ela & Ele are stacking chairs that solve the problem of limited space in small, urban apartments in a very elegant manner. The two chairs are immediately perceived of as being one unit when they are put together, at the same time as the shell chair and main chair function well when separated. The difference in sitting heights is only seven millimetres when the chairs are used separately. The style of the chairs is consistent throughout, and the contrasts between laminates and coloured surfaces create a fine sense of tension.
Ela & Ele represent an innovative solution to a well known problem.
